If you’re considering a full home remodel, you’re probably also considering how to handle all of the stress and anxiety. You may be thinking, “Where will I live?” and “How will I handle strangers in my home?” And then there are the horror stories: contractors taking far longer than originally planned, or merely treating your budget like a light suggestion.
Fear not. Below, Matt Mierek, owner of Aptitude Design & Build, talks through several insider strategies to know as you prepare for your home remodel and working with contractors.
Get Honest And Develop Rapport
Your contractor should be open and willing to develop a rapport with you in order to best understand the vision of what you want and need. Your contractor should be upfront with you about all necessary preparations. Mierek constantly stresses the importance of treating client’s homes with respect. “We might schedule lunch for when a client’s child needs a nap, or let the dog out if needed. We do all kinds of things like that, which makes a really good impact on the homeowner,” he says.
Have A Detail-Oriented Contractor
Mierek says the number one factor that can make the difference between a positive or negative experience with a home remodel is a detail-oriented contractor. The contractor should have access to a team of skilled workers, an architect, a designer and experienced professionals who’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. “Finding a company that has the ability to do that—not just a contractor who only has a couple of guys on hand—is key. There are so many variables involved in figuring out how to do a remodel and all the steps involved.”
He also notes preparing as much as possible on the front end of a job and how working with the homeowner, as a team, is vital. “When you’re doing a whole house, it’s a team effort. When we remodel a house, Aptitude Design and Build’s team needs to be team homeowner. And as long as all the information is communicated to both parties, it can be a pretty seamless job. But there’s a lot of front-end work that’s required.”
Do A Final Walk-Through
“We always do a final walk-through,” says Mierek. “We explain how things work and talk through every detail of the project. That gives us the opportunity to complete that final touch, if needed: a paint touch up, or adding a piece of trim.” The Aptitude team then follows up one to two months after project completion to make sure there aren’t any additional issues needing to be remedied.
